From November 2 to December 21, 2023, Galerie des Minimes presents a selection of photographs by Kai Fusayoshi, a major figure in Kyoto’s counterculture of the 70s. The Japanese photographer presents a selection of prints in Kyoto from the 70s to the 90s.
The “From Honyarado” exhibition also recounts a tragic event in the photographer’s life. In 2015, the Honyarado café-bar where the artist used to work and store his photo archives was devastated by the flames of an arson attack. Kai Fusayoshi lost almost his entire archive. Only a few fragments and snapshots were saved. Here they are, exhibited for the first time in Paris. “There were more than two million negatives, my favorite cameras, copies of the forty or so books I’ve published, my notes… but also hundreds of thousands of photographs on paper: that’s all that’s left,” says the photographer.
